An Ode to Iconic Power Couples

Ahhh Valentine's Day, one of the only times it's socially acceptable to half-eat a dozen truffles and chocolates out of a bright red heart-shaped box. (Btw, am I the only one who hates the pink nougat mystery filling...anyone with me? anyone??) Confectionery indulgences aside, we know how polarizing V-Day can be. Some live for February 14th so they can enjoy a deluxe pre-fixe lobster special with their beloved boo. Others despise how forced the whole day can feel, and would rather hang out with their cat, eat stale popcorn, and binge-watch Scandal. We totally get it.

But, truth be told, there's an essence of V-Day we're totally down to support: a celebration of all kinds of love. We're not just talking romance, here. We're saluting the adoration (and really bizarre inside jokes) in relationships with your bestie, sister, business partner, roommate, etc.

Take for instance, our match-made in (women's health) heaven partnership with B-wom— an app that guides you through how to care for your pelvic area through every stage of life. If you want to spice up your own v-day and add a little extra power to your pelvis, download B-wom, (use code BWOM_ICON for 25% off your first month) and keep your eyes peeled for their upcoming SEX plan. 😻

So here's to lurve, and some of our most favorite power couples of all time!

 Lucy & Ethel

Even though the classic show was centered around Lucy and and Ricky's marriage, I'm pretty sure we can all agree it was her and Ethel's escapades that delivered the most gut-busting laughs. It takes a special kind of bond to reach that level of synchronized chocolate 🍫 stashing. Did you know this famous scene is forever imprinted on a U.S. Postage stamp

Amal Alamuddin & George Clooney

Amal Alamuddin—the Lebanese-British internationally celebrated human rights lawyer—first met George Clooney (I believe he does some sort of acting? 😏 ) in Florence, Italy. When the couple got hitched in 2014, they agreed to sell their wedding pictures to People Magazine and Hello Magazine. But instead of pocketing the millions earned from their nuptial snaps, the couple donated the moolah to several human rights charities with a big chunk of the earnings going to Satellite Sentinel Project, an org that monitors the movements of militant gangs in Sudan. Philanthropic power partners, who are ARE EXPECTING TWINS 👶👶!!

Venus & Serena

As impressive as their tennis accolades 🎾 🏆and business achievements are, it's the relationship between Venus and Serena that takes home the gold. These superstar sisters, who are constantly competing with each other, have a beautiful bond that is unbreakable. Serena recently wrote in a sentimental Instagram post, "There's nothing I would not do for this brave inspirational woman @venuswilliams how fortunate I am to have u as my sister."

Richard & Mildred Loving

Richard and Mildred Loving got married in July of 1958. Because interracial unions were illegal in Virginia (and 23 other states), they were arrested 5 weeks later. A Virginia judge told them "if God had meant whites and blacks to mix, he would not have placed them on different continents." With a perfect last name amid hateful circumstances, the Lovings persisted by fighting for their right to legally love each other, which eventually led to winning a landmark Supreme Court case that nixed racist laws prohibiting interracial marriage 🙌🏿 💞 🙌🏼. (Psst, go watch Loving, the recently released telling of their story that earned Ruth Negga an Oscar nom.)

Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka

Actors Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka are no strangers to juggling both parenting and their careers. While raising their 5-year-old twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace, the couple have never compromised their family time for their careers or vice versa. Their secret? NPH says it boils down to having each other’s back. 👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨

Beyoncé & Jay Z

CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY ARE ALSO BLESSING THE WORLD WITH TWINS?!!?! With a combined net worth of close to $1 billion from their music, fashion, record studios, and other business endeavors, it's prob fair to say that Bey and Jay are the most powerful couple in entertainment. And still going strong (despite some infidelity that inspired a record-breaking visual album) after nearly 15 years together. Beyoncé once said, “We took our time and developed an unbreakable friendship before we got married.” 2 cute 2 handle. 😍

Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi

When Ellen was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, Obama praised that she "has shown us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place so long as we just keep swimming.” Seven years ago, after California Supreme Court overruled the ban on same-sex marriage, Ellen wanted to share that fun, love, and openness to swim through life with her partner and Arrested Development actress, Portia de Rossi. We also adore how comfortably and openly they discuss their decision not to have children.

Barack & Michelle Obama

These smitten kittens first met at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin, when Barack was working as a summer associate and Michelle was his adviser. That's right, behind every successful man, there is a strong, smart, hardworking woman, and Barack will be first to tell you. "Michelle is a tremendously strong person, and has a very strong sense of herself and who she is and where she comes from. But I also think in her eyes you can see a trace of vulnerability that most people don’t know, because when she’s walking through the world she is this tall, beautiful, confident woman.” These dreamers made history as our first Black President & First Lady with unconditional love guiding them all the way. 😭

The Golden Girls

And of course, this wouldn't be a legitimate list of iconic partnerships if we left out one of the greatest girl gangs of all time—The Golden Girls! Remember when they were all stood up on Valentine's Day? Instead of wallowing, Dorothy, Blanche, Rose & Sophia sat around, ate cheesecake, and looked back at memorable Valentine's Days past. Ahhh...now that is true love. 💓

*~ What qualities do you think make a loving partnership iconic? And what are your V-Day plans?? ~*
